About this piece

This is a great example of the work of the self taught artist, Black Joe Jackson. A son of a sharecropping family, Jackson was born in Georgia in 1920. He first started painting after being injured in World War II as a way to rehabilitate an injured hand, but he did not really begin to paint until he retired. His works depict memories of his childhood and have a joyous feeling about them. This painting is done with latex house paint on board, with the dress design being done with potato stamping. It is nicely framed in a gold frame with red accents.
